About MeGilbert's landscape work, like that of his brother Stanley, lay rooted in the English tradition of direct observation and a love of detail. Gilbert, especially, seemed quite unaware of European Modernism which shaped the work of contemporary landscape painters such as Paul Nash, who absorbed the tenets of Cubism and Surrealism into his work.

The farmyard was a typical subject for Gilbert, set in the familiar countryside of Garsington in Oxfordshire, home to the lady Otterline Morrell, who was a friend and a collector of Gilbert's work.
