About MeNadia Benois, who was the mother of the actor Peter Ustinov, was a painter of still life and landscape and also a stage designer. In Russia she studied under Jacovleff, Choukhaieff and her uncle Alexandre Benois, who was also an artist. She married Iona Ustinov and left Russia in 1920, moving to England where she exhibited with the New English Art Club.Benois visited the south of France on several occasions during the 1930s and painted many views of its mountains, rolling landscape and olive groves. The title of this work describes the scene using the provençal dialect - 'lou prat' meaning 'le pré', (or in English 'the meadow') of Julia.
