About MeThis foghorn is of the TRITON type manufactured by Alldays & Onions between 1890-1910. It was once standard equipment onboard both merchant and military shipping especially where the vessels had an open bridge. It has a brass sounder, which is attached to elm boards and leather air chamber which is also studded to the boards using brass studs.
The bellows foghorn came from the St Ola (1) which plied the Orkney route between 1892-1951 and is associated with a binnacle (ABDMS045593) on display at Aberdeen Maritime Museum.
The St Ola (1) was built in Aberdeen by Halls (yard No271 Official No99637) and was operated by the North of Scotland, Orkney & Shetland Steam Navigation Company whose head office was at Regent Quay Aberdeen.
After the St Ola (1) was retired in 1951, both items were given to the operator of the Kirkwall Hotel who was the donors grandmother, Marianne Walker. Both the Kirkwall Hotel and the Stromness Hotel were bases for the ferry passengers who voyaged on the North Scotland, Orkney & Shetland Steam Navigation Co. (known locally as the 'North Boats').
