About MeE. A. Hornel was based in Glasgow, where in the 1880s, there seemed to be a craze for all things Japanese. For Hornel, however, seeing Japanese art second-hand was never enough and in 1893, after much planning and fund-raising, he travelled, with fellow artist George Henry, to Nagasaki. This tall, thin picture takes the format of a Japanese screen. Hornel's use of rich pigments, thickly applied, however, is distinctly European. The two Japanese women are placed in such a way as to give maximum surface interest, their richly coloured kimonos and striped obi (sashes) providing exotic splendour to the composition.
More About Me
Hornel travelled to Japan to witness and understand the culture prior to painting this picture. He combines the format of a Japanese screen with the distinctly European use of rich pigments, thickly applied.
