About MeWith the rise in popularity of the neo-classical style, Josiah Wedgwood developed a new ceramic material to complement the new fashions. Thousands of trials were carried out to make a stoneware body which could be stained throughout in suitable colours. By January 1775 he had perfected this new body which he called Jasper. This sugar basin and cover are in solid white jasper with green ivy festoons and purple berries, and stylised acanthus and stem ornament on the lid. On the body are two cartouches in the form of dark lilac ovals suspended from lilac ribbons and featuring bas-reliefs of classical subjects.
