About MeRobert Henderson Blyth studied at Glasgow School of Art and then at Hospitalfield, a summer school for young artists, where his preference for strong linear drawing and his ability as a designer found a mentor in James Cowie. After a spell teaching at Edinburgh, he became Head of Drawing and Painting at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen. In the 1950s, Blyth's painting became more decorative and he began to appreciate the worth of great 20th century French masters such as Bonnard and Matisse. This watercolour was painted during his time at Edinburgh School of Art, a period when he was strongly drawn to the work of W.G. Gillies - 'Three Red Cottages' shares the lyrical quality of Gillies' fields and skies, yet it is a landscape seen through the prism of a designer's eye.
