About MeRobert Brough was the illegitimate son of a maid. He was brought up by an uncle while his mother moved away from Aberdeen and married, later settling in Linlithgow in Fife. It seems likely therefore, that this vibrant study in watercolours was painted when Brough was visiting his mother and her new family. The portrait painter John Singer Sargent became Brough's mentor and the younger artist adopted vigorous, bravura brushwork in his oil paintings. Here, the fluidity of the watercolour medium bestows movement and life to the landscape.
