About MeRobert Herdman was was a pupil of Robert Scott Lauder in Edinburgh and on his recommendation went to Italy for a year to copy the frescoes of Masaccio. This influenced his style and resulted in his fascination with Italy and Italian light.Although Herdman generally favoured Scottish subjects, this painting reflects the contemporary fashion for foreign subjects.
