About MeJF Herring, the son of a London upholsterer, was to become a successful self-taught painter, receiving royal patronage from George IV and Victoria and Albert. Herring's experiences as a stagecoach driver in his youth gave him a unique understanding of horses - both their temperament and their physical form. It was the painting of thoroughbreds that had made Herring's reputation, but in this later work he skilfully depicts the working farm horse. A new naturalism appeared in his work at this time, evident in the natural groupings of the animals and the masterly suggestion of veins and tendons in the horse's limbs.
More About Me
Herring started as a stagecoach driver, which provided his special interest in horses and how to depict them. His paintings were popularly hung on the walls of inn parlours.
