About MeThe international fame of William Hogarth rests on his prints, but he was also one of the greatest British painters of his generation. He is chiefly renowned as the painter and engraver of morality subjects, such as The Rake's Progress, which he painted in series. Hogarth's best portraits are of his friends, or people that he could meet and depict informally. David Lewis, the subject of this spontaneous sketch, is said to have been the harpist to George II and to have been the father of Mary Lewis, the cousin of Mrs Hogarth.
