About MeWilliam Stewart MacGeorge was a master of autumnal scenery. Born in Castle Douglas in 1861 he was brought up in what is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque areas of Scotland. As a young man, MacGeorge moved to Edinburgh where he studied at The Royal Institution Art School. He studied in Antwerp between 1884-5, at the same time as MacGeorge's near contemporary, E A Hornel. Hornel was to be a great influence on MacGeorge, bringing a new vibrancy to his colour range. Returning to Edinburgh, MacGeorge completed his studies at The Royal Scottish Academy Schools, where in 1887 he won the Keith prize. He settled in Edinburgh, where he lived until his death in 1931. MacGeorge, however, never forsook the countryside of his youth in the South West. The River Dee, in Kircudbrightshire, became the focus for many paintings, as did the surrounding countryside. In 'Autumn' MacGeorge captures the exquisite beauty of the moment, but in so doing reminds one of the transience of the season and by extension, of life itself.
More About Me
Here the beauty of autumn also reminds us of its transience - and by extension maybe the transient nature of life itself?
