About Me'Fyvie Castle' was painted by James Giles for his friend and patron William Gordon of Fyvie in 1828. The painting shows the effects of Giles' Continental tour, which are distinct in the romantic treatment of this landscape. The artist has imbued the picture with many features of an 'ideal' pastoral landscape - the boughs of the trees which frame the subject; the sheep grazing peacefully on the hillside by the river whilst their shepherd reclines, quietly regarding the idyllic scene. But most of all, Giles has suffused the picture with a gentle, golden light that softens the rather harsh, linear features of the Scots baronial style of the building.More About Me
There is a romantic treatment of the castle and its surroundings in this painting created for William Gordon of Fyvie: golden light, blue sky and the castle at the top of a hill.
