About MeJohn had established his reputation as the leading draughtsman in England by the age of twenty. Later, when work of the French Post-Impressionists was first shown in London in 1910, John developed a highly personal style. Painted on small wood panels his figures were drawn in pencil and painted using bright, clear colours in a free and expressive manner.

John led a bohemian life living at long intervals in a caravan. 'Gypsy in the Sandpit' was painted in Dorset, where John and his large family entourage were travelling between 1911 and 1912, also accompanied at intervals by J.D Innes and Derwent Lees. The figures are possibly John's sister- in- law Ethel Nettleship and his son Casper.
