About MeOne of the characteristics of coal gas was its tendency to carry a small percentage of water through mains into domestic systems. To ensure that this did not interfere with the steady flow of gas, catch-pots such as these were inserted in the system where the water condensed clear of the gas. These were periodically emptied by plumbers or gas fitters. The square from one has the name of the maker, M. Taylor and 1870, scratched into the lead. It came from a house on Constitution Street.
