About MeS.J. Peploe made numerous visits to the island of Iona, a place where he could be a painter of atmosphere, wind and weather.

After a visit in 1923, Peploe remarked in a letter '…We had miserable weather in Iona this year…gales and rain the whole time. I got very little done. But that kind of weather suits Iona …I think I prefer it these days to your blue skies and clear distances'.

Peploe's vigorous, broken brushwork, used to describe the stormy sea, has much in common with French Impressionism but also with the Scottish painter, William McTaggart (1835-1910), whose favoured landscape setting was the nearby coast of Kintyre.
