About MeDieppe was a great source of inspiration for Sickert and he may have recommended that other Camden Town painters visit the French port.

Ratcliffe was Gilman's pupil and was influenced by both his teacher and other members of the Camden Town Group. 'Dieppe' is very similar in composition to Sickert's 'The Basket Shop, Rue St Jean, Dieppe' (also Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums) with the hand cart in Ratcliffe's picture forming an almost identical focal point to the one in Sickert's painting. In colour and handling of paint, however, 'Dieppe' is closer to the work of another Canden Town artist, Malcolm Drummond.
