About MeElwin Hawthorne was a leading member of the East London Art Club, whose exhibitions were held from 1929 at the Whitechapel Art Gallery. The artists who exhibited their work there were known as "the East London School" and included W.R. Sickert , William Coldstream, and Hawthorne's uncle Henry Silk. In the Daily Mail on 17th December 1930 the well known art critic P. G. Konody wrote "If an Utrillo of London is to come into being- a painter who would interpret London not only as we see it but as we feel it- he will come from among the members of the East London Group and his name will be either Elwin Hawthorne or W J Steggles".
This view of Orleston Road in Islington was clearly a popular subject for Hawthorne as he made a woodcut of the same scene.
