About MeArchibald David Reid was the younger brother of the prominent Aberdeen based portrait painter Sir George Reid. Archibald studied at the Royal Scottish Academy Schools and in Paris and, like George, his mature work was greatly influenced by the Dutch School in its grey tonality. AD Reid painted mainly Scottish coastal scenes, such as this one of Gardenstown, which shows the women of the fishing industry helping to bring in the day's catch, the sail trawlers moored in the background. By 1850 the railway link to Aberdeen was opened and overnight fish trains ran to Billingsgate Market in London.
More About Me
Landscapes and the scenery of his native shores were common themes for Reid, it is possible that he knew the people in this scene.
