About MeJoyce Cairns studied at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen where she later taught for more than twenty years. Much of her work is autobiographical: she is interested in subconscious dream images as a way of finding her inner self.

The title of this work, '3 a.m.', suggests that it was executed in the early hours of the morning when the artist had just woken up. The image, based on a self-portrait, is part human and part animal. Small doodles of birds, houses and boats overlay this figure and suggest the free-flowing associations inspired by a dream.
