About MeMarischal College, designed by A. Marshall Mackenzie and opened in 1906 by Edward VII this is an extravagant building which illustrates the architecture which could be had in granite at the close of the 19th century. It also shows the skills which existed in the trade, masons working with both power and manual tools. The granite for the building came from Kemnay Quarries on Donside. Note also the work o nthe road outside the colelge. Normally the street would have beend paved with granite cassies (setts) but it would seem that the noise from iron rimmed cartwheels made such a noise that wooden cassies were put down in their place in order that scholars were not distrubed.
