About MeThe famous pioneer photographer George Washington Wilson began life as an artist. This early self portrait shows him as he would have looked when he first took up photography in the 1840s. He is clean shaven, as was the fashion of the time, whereas in later life he grew a beard, as can be seen in Sir George Reid's portrait of the sitter, also at Aberdeen Art Gallery, which dates from 1879.
