About MeLucas van Uden entered Antwerp's artists' guild of St. Luke in 1626–27. Except for a trip along the Rhine river from 1644 to 1646, he spent most of his life and career in Antwerp.

Although there is no evidence that he was ever part of Peter Paul Rubens' extensive studio, his works show the influence of Rubens and certainly van Uden did make copies of Rubens's works. His technique, however, owes as much to earlier painters like Joos de Momper and Jan Brueghel the Elder.

Van Uden specialised in painting from nature, spending a lot of time sketching outside to gather material. His landscape are characterised by a general green hue, slender trees and are populated by incidental pastoral and peasant figures. Many of these figures were actually painted by David Teniers the Younger and that is thought to be the case in this painting.

In this case, Lucas van Uden, a landscape painter, collaborated with David Teniers the Younger, who was known for his portraits and genre paintings and painted the figures at the bottom left hand corner of the painting.
