About MeCarel Weight studied at Goldsmiths College then worked as a set painter before he was made an Official War Artist during World War II. He became one of the most popular of all teachers at the Royal College of Art, where his pupils included David Hockney, Peter Blake and R.B. Kitaj.

Many of his paintings, as here, show suburban settings. Weight liked to paint architectural elements but he always peopled the scene, as he explained: 'Even when I paint a landscape out of doors, and I say I'm not going to put any figures in; when I get back to the studio I always paint in figures; it would be too lonely without people'.
