About MeFrancis Wheatley was a distinguished 18th century London artist but money troubles and personal scandal drove him to Dublin from 1779-1783. There he escaped his debtors and fellow artist John Alexander Gresse, the irate husband of Wheatley's mistress.

Wheatley was at the height of his powers during his years in Ireland, and the types of painting he undertook were numerous. This fresh watercolour of Palmerston Fair, with its tightly controlled drawing, shows the artist at his best.
More About Me

Wheatley was a successful London painter, but did some of his best work in Dublin to where he fled for some years, due to both debts and his mistress' irate husband!
