About MeThis study reveals that Phillip's painting originally had a long horizontal format, with figures ranged across it, much like the long frieze-like arrangement of Wilkie's Pitlessie Fair. The stalls on the right hand side also link this work to Wilkie's famous painting. It seems that the Aberdeen painting (left) also originally had this long format but that at some stage whilst he was painting it, or more probably soon after it was finished, Phillip removed the right hand section of the painting and replaced it with a narrower section, which he then painted to finish the composition.

In the finished painting, Phillip added a notice to the doorway of the tent identifying the regiment as the ‘Royal 42nd Highlanders’. They would later become The Black Watch, one of Scotland’s most renowned regiments.
