    About MeThe bathythermograph was developed in 1938, to measure changes in temperature with depth. These were recorded by a stylus, controlled by a thermometer moving across a smoked slide. (The smoke was produced by burning bear grease). This produced a graph of temperature against depth.

    Bathythermographs were important in discovering the structure of the thermodine - the layer of rapid temperature change between surface and deep water.
