This is a wooden crate with metal strengthening. Originally made to carry a drill bit it was subsequently re-used as a locker for holding emergency escape and survival gear on the Claymore platform before the separate accomodtion platform was installed alongside.
Everone on an installation has ready access to emergency survival equipment in their cabin. The Offshore Safety Case regulations also state that duplicate sets of such equipment must be housed at stretegic points on the installation, such as muster stations, to allow crew not in their cabin to use in an emergency.
