About MeAlong with Philip Wilson Steer, Sickert was the most important of the British Impressionists. He was at various times connected with the stage and his early work includes many gloomy interior views of theatres and music halls. Later his palette lightened considerably and he painted outdoor scenes more often.

Sickert began to develop his use of photography, using newspaper photographs - usually of society people, as a principal inspiration for much of his work.

Sickert is visited Venice in 1904 and again briefly in 1930, yet he painted this particular Venetian view three times in his later years. This may be explained by his using an old photograph of the scene as the inspiration for this work. The figures are not in contemporary dress, so this may be seen as an echo painting - recalling in part his memory of Venice in earlier times.

More About Me

The foreground being in shadow, and monotone, really draws your eye to the sunlit figure in the centre, and the softer background.
