About MeArthur Melville was born in Angus, in the village of Loanhead-of-Guthrie but was brought up and trained in Edinburgh. However, it is for his association with the group of artists known as the Glasgow Boys that he is best remembered.

In this work Melville demonstrates great virtuosity in his handling of the watercolour medium. The large empty area of the bull ring focusses attention on the main action. The brilliant splashes of colour are confined to the figures immediately surrounding the bull but are echoed and repeated in the fans dotted around the arena.
