About MeSeaton came from Edinburgh and in 1805 moved to Aberdeen where, under the recommendation of Alexander Nasmyth, he set up art classes for the general public, teaching drawing, oils and watercolour painting until 1807.

He was employed to "assemble two sets of drawings, the one in colours and the other in Indian ink as Views of Old and New Aberdeen". These were the basis subsequently adapted by Nasmyth for the oil paintings in Aberdeen City Council's collection and that were in turn reproduced as coloured aquatints by Lewis.
