About MeThis is one of a pair of paintings executed by the well known Edinburgh-based landscape artist Alexander Nasmyth. The two views, prospects of Old and New Aberdeen, were commissioned by the Aberdonian John Ewen.Nasmyth based the paintings on watercolour studies by the Aberdeen artist Robert Seaton, which had also been commissioned by Ewen in March 1806. The elegant figure group in regency costume is given a local relevance by the professor, in black, and his students, who wear distinctive red gowns.
Nasmyth's paintings were subsequestly engraved by F.C. Lewis and published by Ewen in 1808.
More About Me
Nasmyth turned completely from portrait painting to landscapes when his aristocratic patrons were offended by his liberal opinions - influenced perhaps by his friend Robert Burns whose portrait he painted in 1787.
