About MePettie was one of a group of very gifted young artists trained in Edinburgh during the early 1850's by Robert Scott Lauder. Like William Quiller Orchardson and several lesser members of the group, Pettie went on to pursue an extremely successful career in London, to which he moved in 1862.

Pettie's work often told stories. Here, his imagination and graphic power capture two national stereotypes, here set at odds. A fierce struggle has broken out between a lean and fiery Celt and a dour Lowland excise officer, the latter having interrupted the transit of smuggled spirits. The viewer is left to decide who will win the tussle.
