About MeThis self-portrait is amongst the artist's earliest work held in the collection. Painted when Phillip was just twenty-three, it portrays the artist at the onset of his career.

Phillip is reputed to have begun work as a house painter and glazier and it was through this job that his interest in art emerged. He was sent to a house to fit a pane of glass and was so distracted by the art work contained in the house that he completely forgot his duties. Touched by Phillip's enthusiasm for art, the owner of the house, recommended him to Lord Panmure who generously agreed to fund his art education. Phillip no doubt demonstrated a keen talent which this early portrait confirms.
