About MeArtists such as Samuel Prout, Thornhill and Hogarth were using water or body colour to accentuate their drawings; but the works remained largely drawings, rather than paintings, as we would recognise the term.

Although this painting falls within the category of topography, Prout's main interest was in texture and ornament, rather than structure and form. The play of sunlight on the ruined building and the inclusion of the rickety gate provide the scene with a picturesque ambience.
