About MeCharles H. Mackie visited Venice in 1908 with fellow artist Adam Bruce Thomson, it was here that he painted 'St Mark's Venice', (now in the collections of Perth Art Gallery) and 'St Mark's by Moonlight'. He was captivated by Venice and worked through the searing heat of summer. Perhaps Mackie chose to paint this night scene to escape the midday heat. St Mark's Basilica is one of the most famous churches in Venice and lies on St Mark's Square. Venice was and still is a popular place for artists to work as it offers a wealth of subject matter.
