About MeThis is a fragment from near the base of a small jug which was made in Westerwald, Germany, probably in the 19th century. It was found in a 19th-century stone and brick drain during an excavation in the St Nicholas Triangle, Aberdeen.
Westerwald is situated on the east bank of the Rhine opposite Koblenz. The 17th- and 18th-century products of this area were very widely traded having been found in Africa, America and the Far East.
These products are typically grey stonewares with a cobalt blue glaze used for decoration (which can be seen on this example). This area still produces a range of simple blue stonewares which are available in most German supermarkets.
