About MeThis is part of the rim and body of a chamber pot made in Westerwald, Germany in the 17th or 18th century. It is decorated with a medallion with flower motif and a lion with a crown. It was found during an excavation at 43-57 Upperkirkgate, Aberdeen.
Westerwald is situated on the east bank of the Rhine opposite Koblenz. The 17th and 18th century products of this area were very widely traded, having been found in Africa, America and the Far East.
These products are typically grey stoneware with a cobalt blue glaze used for decoration (which can be seen on this example). This area still produces a range of simple blue stonewares, which are available in most German supermarkets.
