About MeSteell's family moved from Aberdeen to Edinburgh in 1807. Steell became the most successful scottish sculptor of the 19th century, undertaking commissions for a number of important public monuments in Edinburgh, including his seated figure of Sir Walter Scott for the Scott monument.Throughout his career, the sculptor also executed portraits for private individuals and this high relief medallion of a Victorian woman is believed to represent the donor's mother.
