About MeLater in life, James Pittendrigh MacGillivray produced less and less sculpture, concentrating instead on poetry and, when he found himslef short of money, prints. He had suffered a number of personal tragedies, with the death of his wife in 1910 and the death of his eldest daughter in 1917 and became increasingly lonely and withdrawn.
The sitter, Priscilla, was the daughter of the sculptor H. S. Gamley (1865-1928). The work itself is smoothly finished, with a whirl of drapery at the bottom of the bust contrasting with the delicate features and long neck of Priscilla. Michelangelo's Mannerist tendencies are perhaps an influence here. He was an artist that MacGillivray admired and took inspiration from throughout his career.
