Bonnard conceived 'The Governess and The Promenade' as part of a four panel, free standing screen and the lithographs were printed in an edition of one hundred. The format of the screen exemplifies the strong influence of Japonisme on Bonnards work at this time, as does the arrangement of the close up figures, with their economical use of line and flat, decorative shapes.
