About MeIn the 1890s, Renoir's social contact was concentrated around the circle of fellow Impressionist Berthe Morisot. The models for this lithograph were Julie Manet, the daughter of Morisot, and her young cousin Paulette Gabillard.

Renoir is best known for his figurative studies of young women and in Le Chepeau Épinglé the innocence of the two girls is characteristic of his impression of innate grace, naïvety and freshness. The figures fill the space without crowding it, whilst the soft sketchiness of the drawing confers a sense of spontaneity. Renoir was a painter in oils rather than a draughtsman, which lends his lithographs a painterly quality. The conception of the subject and its handling suggest a fusion of Renoir's earlier rococo inspired style and his later work.
