About MeL.S. Lowry came frequently to Scotland to holiday with his family in seaside towns such as Stonehaven. He also travelled further north - even reaching Wick and Thurso. In this view of Dunnottar Castle Lowry views the castle from the beach to its north. Yet by using a soft pencil on buff coloured paper his image is both brooding and evocative. Lowry's distinctive and typically minimalist treatment is exemplified in this work - each line is significant and serves a purpose in defining the castle and its cliff top setting.J. Beattie Scott
