About MeThis painting shows the ro-ro vessel St Sunniva, owned by P & O Scottish Ferries, which operated services between Aberdeen, Orkney and Shetland. This vessel was the third St Sunniva although the name had not been used for more than forty years before it was revived by P & O. The first St Sunniva was wrecked at Mousa in 1930 while the second was lost on North Atlantic convoy duty in 1943. Fortunately, the third St Sunniva had a happier career.
The vessel was built in 1972 as Djursland, for Danish domestic routes. In 1979, P & O renamed the vessel Panther and put it on their Dover-Boulogne service. In 1987, Panther was refitted and renamed St Sunniva. St Sunniva provided services to the Northern Isles until September 2002, when NorthLink Ferries took over the routes and introduced their own newly-built vessels.
