About MeYvette Guilbert (1867-1944) was a celebrated singer. Before making her career, she was a model and sales assistant at the Printemps department store. In 1889 she appeared at the Eldorado for the first time and in 1890, at the Moulin Rouge.

'A Menilmontant de Bruant' shows Yvette Guilbert singing a popular song written by Aristide Bruant. Guilbert's singing technique was unconventional but her voice was remarkable with an impressive range of vocal nuances. She was known for a distinctive costume that contributed to her persona. Yvette Guilbert wore no jewellery and appeared on stage in a white silk evening gown, with black gloves reaching to the top her arms. She would excite the audience, drawing her gloves off with a striptease effect that drove them wild with enthusiasm.
