About MeIn this small, early oil painting, Fergusson uses muted tones of grey, white and mauve to pick out the elements of the landscape. Like many young British artists at the turn of the century, he was powerfully influenced by the art of James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), with its flawless, subtle harmonies of tones and colour.Fergusson settled in Paris in 1907 and his work was to become radically different. 'In The Sunlight', 1907 (ABDAG 2189), shows his abandonment of Whistler and new found association with the Fauvists, a group of artists including Henri Matisse, who employed intense, pure colours.
More About Me
Etaples is a small fishing port on the North coast of France which attracted a colony of Impressionist and post-Impressionist artists, including John Duncan Fergusson, during the beginning of the 20th century.
