About MeStuart MacKenzie was Aberdeen Art Gallery's first artist in residence in 1987, the year that this picture was painted. He went on to teach at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen for one year and then moved to Glasgow, where he has been working since.

Much of Stuart Mackenzie's earlier work was influenced by his father's experiences as a gamekeeper in Inverness-shire. In 1987, MacKenzie described how his painting had recently become more metaphorical and ambiguous, using a language of symbols.
