About MeAfter 1660 a wide variety of wines and spirits were decanted into unmarked bottles, as were medicinal lotions and sauces. To avoid confusion silver labels describing the contents were hang around the bottles, suspended on silver chains. These labels are still used today on wine and spirit decanters, although paper labelling for bottles was made compulsory in 1860.
