About MeThe monteith is a communal punch bowl. It is thought that this type of bowl is named after a Scot, Monteigh, who wore a scalloped edged coat. This gentleman is reputed to have sung with the diarist, Samuel Peyps on the King's birthday in 1668. This magnificent example was made for the second Earl of Hopetoun in 1746. The notched rim is designed to hang wineglasses to keep them cool in iced water. The rim could be removed providing a bowl for mixing and serving punch.
