The class consisted of five ships-the King George V, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of York, the Anson and the Howe. They joined the Fleet during the earlier part of the conflict. All the ships took part in major operations and only the Prince of Wales was sunk in action-by Japanese bombers in 1941. Their displacement was approximately 38,000 tons; they were armed with ten 14-inch guns and a very large secondary and anti-aircraft armament but carried no torpedo tubes. They were designed for a maximum speed of 29¼ knots, which on occasion was exceeded.
The King George V became the flagship of the Home Fleet in April 1941, and she took part in the destruction of the German battleship Bismarck the following month. She escorted convoys to North Russia, took part in covering the Sicily landings in the summer of 1943, and in 1944 she was sent to join the Far Eastern Fleet and took part in the final operationsagainst Japan. She was broken up in 1958.
