Under the terms of the Armistice, the principal ships which were still seaworthy sailed for the United Kingdom on 20th November, 1918. They consisted of nine battleships, five battle cruisers, seven light cruisers and forty-nine destroyers. They arrived early next day, led by the British cruiser Cardiff, their guns trained fore and aft. The scene was witnessed by Admiral Beatty from HMS Queen Elizabeth, his flagship, as the culminating moment of the silent pressure of predominant sea power.
The German ships later anchored at the northern Fleet Base at Scapa Flow, after a signal was hoisted which read: 'The German Flag will be hauled down at sunset...and will not be hoisted again without permission.'
The end of the majority of the surrendered ships came on 2lst June, 1919. On that day, in
the absence of major British men-of-war on exercise in the North Sea, they were scuttled by their own crews. This was a pre-arranged operation carried out with remarkable skill.
